About the Product: A 84s cotton is used as warp and 70s Khadi is used as weft for constructing this fabric. A peach pink yarn is used as warp to give a detailed peach pink selvedge. This superior quality of weaving has resulted in very little or no transparency in the fabric with a soft hand feel.
About the Craft: The traditional art of Jamdani is believed to be a fusion of the ancient cloth making techniques of Bengal which is more than 2,000 years old. Jamdani is the most expensive product of handloom since it requires the most lengthy and dedicated work to create each exquisite piece.
The beauty of Jamdani is referred to as ‘flowing water’ or ‘sensual quality of moonlight’ for its transparent fabric where the motifs look like they are floating on the fabric. What’s remarkable in this Jamdani weaving technique is that the pattern is not sketched or outlined on the fabric. Each motif speaks of elegance and sophistication. The weaver uses fine needle like spindles to conjure magic with extra weft work that can rival the most intricate embroidery.
The art of weaving Jamdani has been declared by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
