About the Craft: Khadi has an extremely long and illustrious history. For thousands of years, weavers across India have hand-spun and hand-woven to create this marvelous natural fiber cloth, which not only was worn by people across the country but was equally cherished by the Indian emperors and royals. It was also hugely in demand in the western world and was traded in massive quantities by Portuguese, Dutch, French and British traders. Khadi gained a huge significance during India’s freedom struggle and was patronized by Mahatma Gandhi as a symbol of self-reliance and defiance against oppression.
Khadi is usually woven from cotton and may also include silk, or wool, which are all hand-spun into yarn on a spinning wheel called a charkha. It takes hours and hours of incredible hard work, patience and exemplary skills to produce the Khadi fabric. This purely natural fabric is immensely popular through out the world for its amazing qualities, splendid versatility and an irresistible appeal!
